Description

@3-4 cm diameter, would appear to have been feeding on small rodents, possibly two tails visible.

I have seen barred and great horned owls in theis area; large tracts of hardwood, some areas mixed with eastern hemlock, farm & fields nearby.

Description

Small (<1 cm) balls growing flush to log, mixed hardwoods. Color mottled black & tan (slight reddish coloration). Cork-like texture, would return to shape when depressed. Tough, but not brittle, tan interior showing concentric growth rings.

3 specimens growning scattered under oaks; dark grayish brown caps @3 cm with small pointed umbro, twisted slender stem @8-9 cm, gills barely attached/free, no ring or remnant.

Spore print brown to slightly rusty brown.

Small fungi, caps @1-2 cm, growing clustered on rotting log. Caps conical with darker brown center fading to tawny at margin (quite wet when photographed), slightly flaring and scalloped with age. Gills white, stem white at cap progressively darkening to reddish-brown at base.

Growing clustered on fallen log, caps up to @3", dull brownish-red center with light margin, flat (mature specimens). Gills white (showing spore discoloration), upper stem white becoming slightly reddish-brown towards base, a bit of a ring remnant with spore discoloration.

Spore print a heavy dark brownish-purple.

Description

@4-6 cm tawny cap with whitish margin, margin remaining inrolled on mature specimens, growing in small clusters gregariously & in partial fairy ring around base of large Burr (white) oak. Solid white fleshed stem, slightly enlarged at base, no ring or cortina (including younger specimens), top of stem with fine tissue scaling becoming smoother near base. Gills grayish, becoming brown, finely attached/notched at only top of stem. Note brown spotting on gill edges.

Caps were smooth and dry (several days after rain) although considerable leafy debris was dried/stuck to cap.

Spore print brown.

Description

Quite large fruiting with caps up to 6-7" growing clustered from fallen elm. Caps a darker tan/brown, still water soaked from prior day's rain, becoming wavy when mature. Short lateral (if at all) stem, white deep gills decurrent running completely down stem to attachment to log.

Total size @12-18" x 18 x 24" and 6" high.

White spore print, there is also some subtle cross-veining deep in the gill structure against the cap.
