Description

Mekong catfish are so common at Thailand's sport fishing lakes that it's all too easy to forget that in the wild, they are critically endangered.

Roosterfish Nematistius pectoralis

Date

Description

This was an average sized rooster on two days of inshore fishing. Maybe 12 pounds or so. However, I did get 3~4 fish over the 30 pound mark and one that was probably approaching 50# (photo uploaded earlier). They get much bigger still. In some cases up to 100#

Description

If I had to pick a favorite game fish, then giant pangasius/chao phraya catfish would (along with roosterfish) be at the very top. From Greenfield Valley in Hua Hin. Even "smaller" ones, like this 35#/16 kg fish, run like nothing else. Their endurance is also spectacular at any size.

My first giant pangasius wasn't exactly a giant. 7~8kg maybe. Was to do battle with the big boys 7 months later.

Description

Really Greenfield Valley in Hua Hin. This is probably my favorite of the Thailand Lakes and it is such a natural looking setting that its easy to forget that it is NOT in the wild. You can catch anything here and I've been lucky enough to get giant barb, java barb, indian carp, juliens carp, giant pangiasus, iridescent shark, amazon redtail, redtail × tiger cross, and pacu from the lake. However, it is best known for Alligator gar and of course aripaima. This is a relatively small one. Perhaps 32 kg/70 pounds. Still unnerving to hold alone considering the damage they can inflict with their rock solid heads.

Redtail Catfish Phractocephalus hemioliopterus

Date

Description

There was a pretty nasty cold snap in Thailand and Vietnam (hence my sweater) but the Amazon Redtails at IT monsters didn't notice. The action escalated, culminating when this estimated 35~38 kg beast showed up, engulfing a live Indian Carp. It took about 40 minutes to bring it in.

The cold snap that hit Thailand in early 2016 didn't deter the redtail catfish. Like this 50 pound/23 kg brawler.

IT Lake Monsters; here I don't so much look like sub zero anymore as I look like Steve Van Zandt from the Springsteen E Street band. In any event when the sun goes down the alligator gar at IT start hitting like mad. They aren't the best fighters in the world. However, few catches are as desirable just for sheer novelty.

The biggest redtail catfish are at IT monsters. However, the ones at Palm Tree Lagoon are almost the same size and for some reason fight with a vigor like nowhere else.

Doesn't my fashion crime outfit look a bit like Sub Zero? It just makes me wanna scream "MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!" Any '90s kids in the house?!?! I dress like this while fishing for sun protection.

Joking aside, if it's big catfish you're after, then IT monsters is the place to be. Along with Giant Pangasius, there are lots of BIG Amazon redtails. Lots of 15~25 kilo fish, with some as much as 40~45 kilos. After you catch them, you will feel as though you are on top of the world, until the Pangiasus make sure you stay humble.

I have encountered (and caught) a LOT of mahi mahi during my fishing "career," but I have yet to see or catch a truly big one. This particular one, at 39" (about 100cm) and probably 16~17 pounds (about 8 kg) based on the length/weight chart for the species was definitely my PB, and he fought incredibly on light tackle. Catching a big bull mahi (over 14kg/30#) is high on my fishing bucket list and I believe I may soon have a decent chance!
