I am a Curator of Ornithology at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. I grew up watching and observing all sorts of "nature". I was fortunate to be in a "Junior Zoologists" club at the Cincinnati Zoo, from ages 11-14.

I spend a lot of time doing native-plant gardening. I have spent a lot of time photographing herps, butterflies, bees/wasps, and fungi, especially in NC.

I also do some bird work and training of locals in ecotourism, in northern Nicaragua, each winter (4-6 weeks each year; update: this ended in 2019 after the unrest of 2018). I've worked and/or trained students in Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, and the Dominican Republic.

I use various point and shoot cameras (e.g. Nikon P510, Canon SX50 and now a Lumix FZ-1000). I edit all my images, especially to crop.

I am happy to engage with anyone about nature. I get all notices about ID's including "agreements". I don't upload that many so I don't mind seeing who agrees with what. Thus I try to promptly update any disagreements. I'm not always prompt due to work which is always a bit overwhelming - life in the museum world is among the living and the dead - it's extra work I must say.
