Description

This section of the river is popular with a wide variety of fishing birds; Herons, Egrets, Grebes and Cormorants, as well as the more spectacular Ospreys. But I never really considered Gulls to be in that number. Recently, I have realized my error; and today I was reminded of the fact by a very skillful Western Gull. I had seen this individual (the only Gull around at the time) just downstream, standing in the water (photo 2) acting cool. I had ambled about fifty feet farther upstream and was watching Cormorants on rocks, when this same Gull glided past, stooped toward the water's surface and deftly plucked a fish from the current. I was stunned. The Cormorants were amazed. A Great Blue Heron shrugged itself into the air and began to chase the Gull, which stopped momentarily on the bank to regrip the fish before heading to a quiet spot to eat. All done without putting a toe in the water. Trust me, these Gulls can hunt! Check out the added photos to see the action.
