Description

Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina). Big John's Pond, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (East Side), Broad Channel, Queens, NY. Perhaps not the individual which attacked and killed a Wood Duck (see previous observation), in which case this may be a second fairly large Snapping Turtle in the same pond. First photo shows top of shell (carapace) and head just above water, second and third photo show underside of rear of shell and top of tail base visible as animal dives or lowers its front end. See previous observation for an account of a Wood Duck being attacked and killed by a Snapping Turtle.
