The bird in flight is a blue jay, but that's not what the observation is for. In the center of the image is a black-and-white bird on a tree-branch. In person, the bird had distinct red feathers on the back of its head, and I concluded it was a hairy woodpecker based on the fact that it was roughly the same size as the blue jay. I recall Downy woodpeckers has being slightly smaller. It's noteworthy that I was first made aware of the animal's presence by the sound of it knocking its head into the tree.
