Description

My 6th & final chapter in my behavior series. Intimidation behaviors.
Photo 1: Turkey Vulture Intimidation Display
I believe that what the vulture did at this point was behavior meant to intimidate me so I would leave the vicinity of its meal. It stood on the edge of the roof facing me and raised its wings to look bigger, all the while looking me dead in the eye.

Photo 2: Full Intimidation Mode
Still facing me and looking right at me, the vulture proceeded to spread its wings fully and held this position for about 3 minutes. It was an awesome display. I was muttering to myself "are you kidding me?" Could not believe I was getting to see this as I clicked away. I had to back off on my camera zoom to get the wingspread in the frame. They have a wing span up to almost 6 feet.

Photo 3: Throwing In A Big Yawn For Good Measure
When I didn't move after 3 minutes of wings spread, the vulture tried one more intimidation behavior with a very large yawn. This time it did not seem a relaxation behavior. I was duly impressed.
Photo 4: Checking To See If I Got The Message
After the yawn, the vulture leaned down and peered at me, as though to see if I would leave now. I was thrilled at all the photos I'd got and wanted to let the bird finish its meal. I went back inside and observed thru a window that the vulture returned to the squirrel meal. However, it only got a few additional bites before a car drove down the street and scared the vulture. The vulture disappeared and did not come back again. An hour later when I checked, the dead squirrel was gone. The entire experience took place over an hour and 2 minutes.
