Description

Visiting Monarda punctata in a large blooming colony of the plant at the north edge of a sandy old field, across a rural road from a black oak woodland. See: https://bugguide.net/node/view/1477429#2534933. I didn't find many good photos of this beautiful wasp online, so I've posted several; though taken near the same time it's possible more than one individual is depicted. The dust on its back is probably Monarda punctata pollen, it's a favorite plant among the wasps. Probably a female (I think I'm seeing 'rakes' on the front legs), but I'm not sure.
