This plant was not in flower but I recognized it based on the distinctive color, shape and texture of the leaves along with the indumenta. I have seen this species near Tingo Maria in Huanuco and also in Madre de Dios, PN Manu. No other plants of this form were seen along this road.

There has been much confusion between this phenotype and the 'El Whiskey' plant and C. acreanus. It has now been determined as a sp. nov. to be named Costus obscurus Maas & Skinner
