I found this small red tick-like arthropod in a shallow still pond connected to Onion Creek in southeast Austin. I noticed it had 4 sets of legs and two large mandibles. There appears to be 2 eye spots towards the front of the animal and small hairs protruding from its body. It was approximately one centimeter long and barely visable with the naked eyes. In the water sample I collected, it was swimming around at high speeds.
