Description

lowveld jolly-jumping gala

A colony of these athletic fellas enjoy the (human) deserted swimming pool surround by night. I counted 7 individuals of various sizes, the largest (first pic) a full 8 cm long. Their strategy is to leap effortlessly into the water, swim a short distance away from the threat-with-a-torch, and immediately hop out onto the tiled side again.

I tried hard to catch the big fella for a close-up photo op. Got a (left) hand to him. But the explosive power of his legs forced his slippery torpedo-body through my clumsy fingers with ease.

Not for nothing are they known as the world-champion long-jumpers!

After that I let 'em enjoy the residual warmth of their pool tiles in peace.
