Dark grey-brown to black bark, rough and loosely peeling in places. The drooping leaves form an irregular, soft feathery canopy. The dark-brown hooked thorns are paired. Early spring the tree is covered with spikes of cream-coloured flowers. Flowers are sweet scented. Straight flat brown pods with pointed tips, split open on the tree when dry.
