Description

This was an amazing coincidence: I was leading a Balcones Songbird Festival tour and we were hiking a trail at Doeskin Ranch. We came upon some Coyote/buffalo gourd (Cucurbita foetidissima) when I was about to tell the story of how John Harrington once documented a rare stem-borer moth at that location. Just then, I looked down and there was a stem-borer moth!! Probably not 30 ft from where John had documented one (a different species, M. gloriosa) some 7-1/2 yrs earlier. See,

This is only the second time I have observed Melittia grandis. Compare,

This is a first sighting for the Refuge and also appears to be a new Burnet County record (based on MPG, BG, and LepSoc).
