Locally common. Saxicolous on andesitic boulders. Thallus mostly monophyllous (some specimens noted with secondary lobule development), upper surface dark brown to brown-black when wet, dark grey to charcoal when dry, pustulate-areolate cracked, underside smooth black with paler brown margins, without rhizinomorphs or thalloconidia. Apothecia sessile, black, gyrose.
