Description

Texas Spiny Lizard Mating Behaviors
I observed & photographed this thru the blinds of a French glass door at my daughter's house in Burleson, Texas
Photo 1: Male Texas Spiny Lizard
I was at my daughter's house in Burleson when I looked out her glass door and saw a lizard basking in the sun. Got my camera and started taking photos thru her glass kitchen door. This turned out to be a male lizard on the concrete in front of her deck.
Photo 2: A Female Shows Up
Suddenly a very fat female lizard strolled out from under the deck. Her plumpness meant she was full of eggs and ready to mate. This state of being full of eggs is called being gravid.

Photo 3: Male Notices The Female
She had the full attention of the male lizard.
Photo 4: Male Follows The Female
The male started following the female. At this point she was ignoring him.
Photo 5: Male Glares At The Photographer
I think I made a movement at this moment because the male suddenly glared in my direction.
Photo 6: Male Catches Up To Female
When I didn't make any further movements, the male turned his attention back to the female.

Photo 7: Female Climbs Up The Step
The female had a destination in mind and climbed up on the first step leading to the deck.
Photo 8: Well? What Are You Waiting For?
After reaching the step, the female turned around and looked at the male as though asking him what he was waiting on.
Photo 9: Male Joins Female On The Step
Needless to say, the male hurried to join the female on the step.
Photo 10: Male Displays His Throat Pouch
Both lizards went up the steps to the deck. At this point the male started doing push-ups which is part of lizard courtship behavior. It also is behavior used when two males meet. They both do push-ups until one backs away. After the push-ups, the male inflated his throat pouch, which is more courtship behavior. The pouch is not red like anole lizards but does inflate a bit as you can see in this photo.
Photo 11: Female Asumes A Mating Position
At this point the female accepted the male as an appropriate mate. She started doing her courtship moves. She hopped, stiff legged, a few times then flattened down and assumed the lizard mating position. It was quite funny watching him do push-ups while she hopped around.

Photo 12: Male Approaches
When the male didn't do anything, the females did a few more stiff-legged hops and turned sideways to see what the male did. This time the male approached her, doing pushups all the way there.

Photo 13: Female Hooks Toes Over Males Arm
As the male came closer, the female reached out and hooked her toes over the male's arm.

Photo 14: Male Throws An Arm Over Female
Once again the female assumed the mating position. This time the male acted with confidence. She still has toes hooked over his leg and he throws an arm over her back. It was kind of sweet.
Photo 15: Getting Into Position
Now they finally get down to business.
Photo 16: Lining Up Body Parts
The female helps by lifting up the lower part of her body. The male puts an arm around her and lines up their bodies for mating. Was happy to get this much detail considering I'm still shooting thru a dirty glass door.

Photo 17: Mating
This is when the actual mating takes place.
Photo 18: Mating From A Different Angle
I moved from the glass door to a window to get a different angle. Both are still joined.
Photo 19: Disengagement
The actual mating lasted less than a minute, then the male disengaged and started moving off the female. You can see the sex organs of each lizard in this shot. The male lizard sex organ is called a hemipenes. It is very odd looking and unique. You can read about it here: https://en.wikivet.net/Lizard_Reproductive_System
Photo 20: Male Backs Off Of Female
The male slowly backed off the female. She stayed motionless while he did that.
Photo 21: Female Stays Motionless
After the male backed off & left her, the female turned a bit then stayed motionless for a long time. That might aid in successful fertilization of her eggs.
Photo 22: Male Runs Around Doing Push-ups
While the female was staying motionless, the male lizard ran all over the deck doing push-ups. It was as though he was bragging about his virility. This was the last shot. All the courtship moves leading up to the mating actually took a lot of time although the actual mating act was less than a minute. First shot to last was around an hour.
