Description

EDITED: NOT A SPOTTED OWL. Many examples and debates on online FB forums led me to learn that this certainly is not a Spotted but a Barred Owl. Birds are still far harder than fungi for me to ID! This park is very close to downtown Olympia, WA but is a preserved habitat with some of the oldest Douglas fir, Spruce and Western hemlock stands in Western Washington state. Just wished I would have grabbed my Canon SX520 with filters instead of the one used for this set/video(SX150). Have a short video that I took towards the end of our encounter when I stupidly "hoo'd" to get it to turn around once more. Truly one of the coolest and most unexpected encounters I have been lucky enough to have locally while foraging for fungi(G. oregonense) at this location. The canopy is Spruce and Western hemlock dominant in this section of the park but has countless 100yr + old trees throughout. Hoping for more early morning encounters with this majestic forest denizen for the remainder of our time here in East Olympia.
