Slender Inshore Squid (Doryteuthis pleii)

Description

A few small squids, Doryteuthis pleii (formerly Loligo pleii), were collected by a dredge in less than 10 m depth near Port Aransas, on a field trip on the R/V Katy.

They were still alive when brought up but they were not in good shape and a few died.

In the live ones, the chromatophores on the squid's skin were pulsating just like in the following video:

We tried to stimulate the chromatophores by playing music but they did not react to it. Note that in the video linked above, the squid was dead and the skin was stimulated (by electric impulses?) using an iPod.
