Identified using Oosterbroek, 1984 (A revision of the crane-fly genus Nephrotoma Meigen, 1803, in North America [Diptera: Tipulidae]. Part II: the Non-Dorsalis species-groups).

• Lateral stripes on anterior scutum don't really curve downward.
• No dorsal abdominal markings
• Side of thorax mostly yellow/orange with a few black markings
• Group of long distinct setae on the posterior edge of sternite 8 that don't seem to be present in either ferruginea (which is out of range anyway) or abbreviatus.
• Sternite 8 not extended
• Geographic range eliminates much of the options
• In addition, the femora are light brown but with darkened apices.
