Compton Oak (a hybrid - Quercus virginiana x Quercus lyrata) observed at Ghirardi Family WaterSmart Park in League City TX, and this specimen is also known as the "Ghirardi Oak". The large tree was moved in 2012 from a location 1500 feet north of here when local roads were widened. Although the facts are not really known, the tree is thought to have been planted from another place over 100 years ago (since Overcup Oak is not known to occur natively in the immediate area, but does occur wild in adjacent counties), so this specimen is also assumed not to be native at this exact location, but was a beloved community landmark, and is an interesting story.
