Description

Male Erythemis vesiculosa predating cicadellid

I saw a few of this species, both of which kept flying around the margins of the wooded perimeter and picking off smaller insects.

Considering this is a larger dragonfly (at least by physical dimensions, possibly not by weight) it is interesting to see the typical disparity in prey sizes.

I have seen E. vesiculosa with proportionally smaller dragonflies or butterflies which are substantially larger than the prey here, but I have never seen any with prey that is alike or nearly alike in size to itself (as in previous observation which is readily seen among female E. simplicicollis, https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/26392103). Of course, a lack of witnessing it definitely doesn't mean that is doesn't or cannot happen.
