Description

Partially incapacitated male Pachydiplax longipennis predated by coccinellid larva

I was scanning the vegetation along a small ephemeral pond and saw this dragonfly in an unnatural, suspended position. He was not moving wings nor legs but on closer examination he was respirating (as told through expansion and contraction of abdomen).

I sat on the ground and leaned in, noticing a lady beetle larva consuming the integument interstitial to the abdominal segments just below his secondary genitalia.

With an even closer look I found no spiders, necrotization, or fatal malformations/obvious trauma. I have no knowledge of lady beetles but it is hard to imagine a situation where the larva could subdue a healthy odonate.

Maybe a spider rendered him such and was driven off before it could begin consuming him for some reason. I think less possibly a bird could have captured, essentially paralyzed/stunned (during capture), and then dropped him.

From capturing odonates in the past I have noticed blunt force can cause temporary suspension of voluntary movement (feigned or actual).

I walked around some more and returned 20 or so minutes later to find the situation was the same. I did not touch the specimen despite my curiosity to more easily observe from different angles and with a loupe.

A brief trip the next day revealed no answers and a clean slate, as expected.
