Description

Shooting a series of photos of these Black-necked Stilts preening, I caught an image of this bird's nicitating membrane closing. The nicitating membrane is a semi-transparent membrane located beneath the upper and lower eyelids in birds, and closes horizontally across the surface of the eye to protect and clean. The level of transparency allows the bird to utilize the membrane while in flight, etc.
