Regenerating. In the early 1990s a mysterious 'disease' (meaning never completely resolved) struck mamaku (Cyathea medullaris) around Auckland / Northland killing in some areas 100% of the 'adults' (i.e mature trunked specimens). Parts of Piha were severely afflicted - these images show the regeneration of this species (often under the still standing dead trunks of the ones killed in the early 1990s).
