City Nature Challenge 2020 in Ann Arbor/Washtenaw: Your iNat IDs Will Help Us Win!

You are @'ed on this journal entry because you have IDed at least a couple of dozen observations in iNat in Washtenaw and/or the surrounding counties. If you'd rather not be copied in future, just let me know and I'll remove you.

Natural Area Preservation (NAP) is spearheading Ann Arbor/Washtenaw’s participation in the 2020 City Nature Challenge (CNC), where cities spend 4 days in friendly competition to see who can get the most nature-based observations, species, participants, and more. Last year, the global CNC generated around 973,000 observations in those 4 days, and in Ann Arbor we had 315 observations. This year, we are working to increase participation and anticipate several thousand!

Because you’ve already earned your iNat ID street cred in southeast Michigan, we thought you might like to help ID observations from our area – observations only count if they’ve been identified! The CNC observation period is 24-27 April; ID starts with observations made on the 24th, and will go through 3 May.

If you’d like to participate in observations, please see the journal post right before this one.

If you’d like to participate in identification, we plan to have ID-related events, including a webinar on tips for IDing observations on iNat, ID parties (in person and maybe even virtual), finding folks willing to be tagged for help in particular taxa, and more.

If you’d like to receive updates on events, please sign up to the City Nature Challenge Ann Arbor project on iNat. You'll find more info at the other links too.

If you’d like to help organize, please contact me - it can be as low key or extravagant as you like! Here are just a few ideas:

Spread the word!
• Tell all your hiking, birding, herping, fishing, photography, etc., and especially iNat friends!
• Email/visit relevant organizations that might be interested in IDing and tell them about it
• Like and repost the social media posts (see links below)
• Hang a notice in your coffee shop!*

Host** an event before and/or during CNC!!
• Throw an ID party – get a knot of iNatters (what’s the collective for iNatters anyway?!) together during CNC and help each other out with IDs while snacking on beer and pizza, or tea and biscuits 😊
• Find or write up tip sheets for how to photograph spring taxa so they are easiest to ID. You’ve had to work with the photos – what makes it easier, or not?

Participate in an Event!!
Check out the iNat CNC Ann Arbor project page and NAP’s Facebook page for listings. There are just a couple of ID-related ones now – please share your ideas and let’s get more!

* We have ad materials if you’d like to blanket an area (e.g., every shop in downtown Dexter that has a place to post notices – they are a nice lime green lol).
** What is “hosting”? Check out these docs. For example, for an ID party, provide info on what you’d like to do, where (your rec room, a school, a coffee shop…), when, whether you would like support, etc. We’ll announce it as a new event, then show up at the place and time, and have fun!
*** Dial-up for webinars: Either join with computer audio, or call in +1 929 436 2866 US (New York); Meeting ID: 353 604 4913. No need to pre-register - just dial in
