Creation of the Herps of New York State Project

This project was created as a place in I-Naturalist to compile records from New York State. I have been uploading many of my observations and noticed no place for these New York records. Since the New York State Amphibian and Reptile Atlas Project ended (1990 - 1999) there has been no concerted effort to compile data to understand current ranges that I am aware of. It also gives observers a way to get a positive ID for herps that they are not sure of and to have a venue for citizen science contributions that will be peer reviewed once I find a few curators to assist with the project.

Several people here in Northern Westchester have observed mole salamanders on warm days in January and February. Anyone else reporting them this early? We have not noticed big migrations yet.
