Rare and interesting finds? (and ID/observation upload window open until Sat Apr 22, 11am CST)
Thank you to everyone who participated in the City Nature ChallengeL Chicago!
The national organizers (LA and SF) have asked us to select a few rare or interesting finds from Chicago to highlight in a national press release. So I'm hoping to crowd source from all of the Chicago observers and identifiers. Please share your thoughts by replying to this post.
Also, they will be tabulating the results tomorrow, Saturday April 22 at 11am CST. So we have until that time to continue to ID and upload observations made between April 14 and 18.
I'll be sending out another journal post in a few days with the final results and links to any national press.

Most interesting personally was the sight (too distant for my feeble phone camera) of a Horned Grebe at Crabtree Nature Center. It was a lifer for me & my wife - and is considered a bird of concern in our region. A close second was seeing 3 Sandhill cranes circling over the recently burned Phantom Prairie out there. The staff at Crabtree thought there are some nesting out there this year. (As an aside we now see cranes flying in the vicinity pretty routinely nowadays. Not like Canada Geese (yikes) but the sight of these birds is a most welcom development!

We had not one, but TWO Northern Mockingbirds in Chicago. It is a species that doesn't typically come this far north, and when it does, it usually doesn't venture into the city. We found one at Montrose, which was seen by many, and a few hours later had another at Graceland Cemetery. We photographed both. The Swamp Darners reported by several were an unusual early arrival to the area.
