Turtles of Mountain Lake

Coordinated by the Presidio Trust, Mountain Lake is in the middle of a collaborative restoration to bring it back to its natural state. The Presidio Trust is an innovative federal agency created to save the Presidio and transform it for a new national purpose. Mountain Lake is a living laboratory for restoration and an exciting place to explore how a natural area can be brought back to life with the participation of the community. Park managers and volunteers are restoring vitality to the lake. The effort took a major leap forward in 2013 as contaminated sediment from the highway was removed and the depth of the lake was increased by 50 percent. The aims of this iNaturalist project are to track the recovery of native western pond turtles (Actinemys marmorata) and to track the arrival of invasive turtle like the red eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans). less ↑
