After we built a house in 2014 my wife and I started to redesign the 650 square meter yard as a "wildlife garden", i.e. apart from a 50 square meters lawn, 25 pavement in front of garage and 12 square meters to grow vegetables the area is dedicated to wildlife. We do this by choosing mostly native or near-native (mostly mediterranean) plants, providing nesting opportunities, creating habitats (meadow, pond, dead wood piles, etc.). Important criteria for choosing plant species are their value as caterpillar food or food source for pollinating insects. The purpose of this project is to track the unfolding species diversity in our yard.
The pond as an important addition was created in autumn 2017.
