This is the Army Corps of Engineers iNaturalist account for Albeni Falls Dam near Oldtown, Idaho.
Albeni Falls Dam was authorized for construction under the Flood Control Act of 1950. This Act was signed by the United States Congress in response to a great flood that swept over the river valleys of the Columbia basin in 1948. Albeni Falls Dam was built from January 1951 to December of 1955 at a total cost of $34 million.
The reservoir and its surrounding territory offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities, and project lands allow ready access to the lake. Existing project facilities provide opportunities for many types and intensities of outdoor recreation experiences, which vary from primitive boat access camping to high-density day use activities. Recreation facilities are heavily used during the summer. In addition to their value for human use, project lands provide thousands of acres of high quality wildlife habitat that supports significant wildlife populations, including many species of resident and migratory waterfowl.
Staff at Albeni Falls Dam work to protect wildlife and preserve habitat on project lands. Some of the natural resource management activities include conservation and damage prevention, recreation, hunting, fishing, and species inventorying and monitoring. Natural resource managers perform surveys for reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and bats within the Albeni Falls Dam project boundaries, and work with local, State, and other Federal agencies to achieve management goals.
