Alien Biocontrol.

South Africa has an active and very successful biocontrol programme that is saving millions of dollars each year in control, water supply, fire fuel reduction and biodiversity loss.

Early programmes focussed on Cacti invading rangeland and waterplants invading watercourses. More modern efforts have concentrated on Wattles, Needlebushes, and other Fynbos invaders. Most recently Grassland and Savanna invaders have been targeted. Only Marine ecosystems have not been investigated for biocontrols.

Once established biocontrols are cheap, efficient, dedicated and relentless. Economics, politics and opinions are irrelevant. But bioncontrol on its own is not enough - it can slow down invasions and prevent impenetrable stands from wiping out biodiversity and ecosystem services, but other management is needed to keep alien numbers low.
