Definitions of categories
Behaviour among ants:
• Communication: antennal contact, stridulation, grooming, any other shared behaviour, (except trailing);
• Defence: activities regarding nest and trail defence, territorial expansion (incl. warfare with other ants - %), suicide bombing, etc.;
• Nesting: building and repair of nests, including illustrations of nests (excavations nesting materials, nest structure), including galleries and "cow sheds", and middens;
• Cooperation and competition: joint actions, trophallaxis, vampirsim
• Mating: activities and observations of alates;
• Slavery and Slaves: slavery (raiding nests for workers), parasitism (living off other ants or their food in their nests) and similar behaviours -%;
• Trailing: moving in trails (for any reason: foraging, movement or nest relocation - columns on ants on the move);
Feeding:
• Locomotion: (Foraging): searching for food and transporting food (pieces) to the nest;
• Predation/food: attacking or transporting live organism that is identifiable for food - %;
• Cultivation and Farming: growing fungi or farming other insects (aphids, scales, etc.) and associated behaviour (e.g. 'milking', protection) - %;
• Scavenging: consuming dead organisms (not killed by the ants) - %;
• Warfare and raiding: Raiding other ants/termites for food - %;
• Myrmecochory: transport or eating of ant-fruit associated with seeds- dispersal but not predation (seed not consumed);
Behaviours with other insects/animals:
• Hosts: animals living in or sheltering in ants nests (this can include other ant species) -%;
• Mimicry: other animals pretending to be or looking like ants (incl. other ant species) - please add the Ant Mimicry project %%.
• Casual interactions: avoidance behaviour, odd or random encounters;
• Feeding on ants: observations of other animals feeding on ants (or evidence thereof), also parasitism and fungi (e.g. Zombie Ants) - $;
