This project will collect data and observations that will help us to better understand the dynamics of bird migration and to clarify the degree to which migration interacts with factors like nighttime lighting to cause different bird species to collide with buildings in bright urban areas of Texas. Much of the collision monitoring data collected will serve as baseline datasets to compare bird collision mortality rates across Texas cities. With our increased education and awareness efforts aimed at getting more Texans to turn lights out for bird safety during peak migration periods, it is our collective goal to see and measure a significant statewide decrease in bird-building collision mortality.
The Lights Out Texas effort is led by a coalition that includes conservation non-profits, universities, governmental organizations, and Texans dedicated to the conservation of birds.
