Butterflies not only act as pollinators, but long-term population trends also provide insight on the health of the surrounding environment. Goal:
Collect long-term data on butterfly populations in New York City by engaging grassroots volunteer groups.
Guidelines:
Conducting the Count
• 1-4 people per count party
• Spend one hour collecting data in your garden
• Counts must be conducted between 10am and 5pm
• Take pictures
• Have fun!
Species studied:
• Butterflies (Lepidoptera)
Where to count:
• Community gardens and parks within the five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island)
• Record location (address, latitude and longitude, or cross-streets, as well as the name of the park or the garden)
