City Nature Challenge 2022: Southern Overberg's Journal

Invitation to join the Great Southern Bioblitz project in the Overberg

It is exciting that Southern Overberg has been extended into the larger Overberg for the upcoming Great Southern Bioblitz from 28-31 October 2022. The area now more or less includes the Overberg District without the Overstrand.

We want all our members of the past City Nature Challenge (CNC) in the Southern Overberg to also become members of our first Great Southern Bioblitz (GSB) in the Overberg.

But first, read more about our scope for this GSB in the Overberg. If you like what you’ve read and want to stay informed about our plans, then click on join. Also click on membership and select to receive project journal notifications.

Results and congratulations!

Now that the results are out, we congratulate all our Southern Overberg observers, winners and expert identifiers! A huge thank you to all of you for putting us in 6th place out of 20 cities in Southern Africa!

Some interesting insights:

  • average observations per observer: 95
  • every 5th observation was of a different species
  • 99.5% of observations were verifiable
  • 55.6% of observations achieved research grade
  • 14.7% of observations were of threatened species
  • we also rocked the boat with all our faves!

6 May - 2 days to go!

First of all a big thank you to everybody for joining our events and for making it such jolly good fun!

The big upload has been happening since Tuesday. We faced a huge backlog of casual observations without any id’s by Thursday morning. Only a few observations were at research grade.

With the help of Crew and event leaders we helped to lift most observations up to genus level. We then noticed that more experts from elsewhere were helping us. The quality then snowballed all the way through the 2800 observations of 38 observers by late Thursday.

The best surprise was when a large batch of observations started rolling in on Friday morning. And it is still rolling in. These guys are experts themselves and the species are all way-out complicated. We need help from all the experts out there!

With only 2 days left, we are standing at 3400 observations. But we still need to firm up id’s for half of them.
Help us make them count!

Plans for our CNC events are taking shape

We are getting excited when we see the plans for our CNC events coming together. But we still need your help with a few things.

We want people to enjoy our events as opportunities to be out in nature, and also to experience and learn more about the species they see there by making observations using the iNaturalist phone App or iNaturalist.org. We want more people to get enthusiastic about our wild flowers so that they may also become members of our Southern Overberg CREW (Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wild Flowers) group.

Our events are carefully planned around our limited capacity. To avoid disappointment please RSVP by Wednesday 27 April.

AGULHAS NATIONAL PARK has waived their conservation fee to all who take part in our CNC events inside their Park:

On 29 April – Our first event inside Agulhas NP is at Rietfontein. Sharndré Heuvel from Western Cape CREW, Emma de Kock (ANP) and Charleen Brunke will meet and direct us. The meeting point is at 9h00 at the green water tanks on the road from Uintjieskuil. (From the Elim-Struisbaai road, take Wolvengat rd (R317), turn left at Gansbaai/Die Dam sign, after 500m left to Uintjieskuil rd and onto Rietfontein) RSVP dekockemma@gmail.com
On 30 April – Our second event inside Agulhas NP is a moderate 10 km walk at Soetanysberg in stunning fynbos and with great views over the ocean. This is a must do and not to be missed! We need botanists and experts on the vast Protea and Erica families, so well represented here, to join us. We are fascinated by the rock that informs our fynbos today, so please contact and join us if you’re an expert on the local geology. Anybody that can add synergy, please join us. Your contacts are Charleen Brunke and Emma de Kock (ANP). We meet at 9h00 at the end of Bergplaas road, at ANP Bergplaas house. (From Bredasdorp on R43 for 20km. Turn left onto Elim-Struisbaai rd. Continue 6km and turn right onto Bergplaas rd. Continue to end of Bergplaas road) RSVP charleenbrunke@outlook.com
