This project is open to anyone who encounters and records an Oak (genus Quercus) anywhere in Oklahoma. With a photo and location, as well as any additional information about habitat (sandstone, limestone, clay, hilly, swampy, etc.), we can begin to increase our understanding of the distribution of oaks in Oklahoma. Our state is unique, ecologically, in that we are at the transition of forest to plains, and many species of oak are at their distributional limit in Oklahoma. Additionally, altered land-use and management practices have allowed oak species that were once separated to interact much more freely, increasing the likelihood of interesting hybrids. Identification of such hybrids could be important for the conservation and management of oak forest and landscapes in the face of a changing and uncertain climate.
