Duxbury Reef Intertidal Biodiversity Project

We are interested in documenting the biodiversity at Duxbury Reef in Bolinas, California. This project is a partnership between the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, the California Academy of Sciences and our amazing Rocky Shore volunteers!

Duxbury Reef and the area surrounding Agate Beach is a California State Marine Conservation Area. This designation means fishing by line is allowed, but the harvesting of marine invertebrates (even if for bait), is not. Fishing for red abalone is allowed, but all California Department of Fish and Wildlife rules apply. Please abide by the MPA rules while visiting Duxubry. iNaturalist automatically obscures the coordinates of globally endangered species, as determined by the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). Many species that are under threat of illegal collection at Duxbury are not on this list, because their populations overall are doing just fine. If you feel strongly about not divulging the location of species that may be poached, you can turn on the geo-privacy settings for those observations and you can ask others to do the same. less ↑
