"Persons caught violating the new rule could be charged with a second-degree misdemeanor and face jail time. “The penalty for a first offense is a fine up to $500 or up to 60 days in jail, with escalating penalties for repeat offenders,” the FWC said."

Facing extinction, captive-reared Florida grasshopper sparrows to be released in the wild

KENANSVILLE, Fla. (FOX 13) - The rarest bird in Florida is on the brink of extinction, and wildlife officials are continuing their efforts to save the little bird’s population.

There are fewer than 80 Florida grasshopper sparrows remaining in the wild, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Last year, officials said the sparrow could become extinct by 2020.

It was a typical evening in Flamingo, Florida—gentle breezes, palm fronds rustling, scalloped waves lapping against tangled mangroves. It’s easy to imagine that the scene would have relaxed Fronie, but tonight was different. She could not put her mind at ease. Early that morning, on July 8, 1905, her husband, Guy Bradley, had left for Oyster Keys. Now it was well past supper, and his boat was nowhere to be seen.

South Florida bird poachers who snared more than 400 songbirds are sentenced to prison

Three South Florida men who made up half of a sophisticated bird-smuggling operation will spend between six and 15 months in prison, U.S. Attorney Benjamin Greenberg announced this week.
