Freshwater Algae of New England and New York

Microorganisms are incredibly diverse. A small sample of water from a local pond can contain dozens of species - some related to plants, some related to fungi, and some belonging to completely different, ancient lineages of eukaryotes. Algae are a subset of this diversity: they are organisms that contain a photosynthetic organelle (plastid).
Even though New England's algal flora has been explored extensively in the past, comprehensive works on algae in the region are many decades old and likely do not reflect current species distributions.
This project will collect observations of the various non-marine algae occurring in New England - both micro and macroscopic. less ↑
