This citizen science project will help us better understand the distribution and status of freshwater mussels in the western U.S.A. and Canada. Freshwater mussels are the most at-risk group in North America, and there are many data gaps for western species. These data are used by scientists in the research and conservation of freshwater mussels. This project is specific to mussels in fresh waters, i.e. rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs--DO NOT report marine (Mytilus; blue) mussels.
Freshwater mussel observations are needed from the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and from the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.
This project was initiated by the Pacific Northwest Native Freshwater Mussel Workgroup (http://pnwmussels.org). Visit our web site for more information and resources.
