The Gowanus Canal Conservancy will be hosting a Pilot Bioblitz, open to volunteers and local experts, before our first formal Bioblitz in the summer of 2018. The goal of this Bioblitz will be to identify and record the unique ecosystems that have evolved in and on the banks of the Canal. Much of these communities will be removed over the next decade through the Superfund Cleanup. We will use this information to inform future plantings and the Natural Resource Damages Assessment.
This Pilot-blitz is to test our methods and identify some of the fauna and flora at specific sites along the Canal. This will give us a “snapshot” of the of the biodiversity found in these locations at this particular time.
We are looking for experts and volunteer enthusiasts in the following taxa:
.Vascular plants
.Birds (start at 630am)
.Insects
.Aquatic invertebrates
A map with meetup locations and specific zones for the Pilot-Blitz will be emailed to participants.
