Half-Earth: How to Save the Natural World

“Each project is special unto itself. Each requires knowledge and love of the local environment shared by partnerships of scientists, activists, and political and economic leaders. To succeed, it needs every bit of their entrepreneurship, courage, and persistence.” - Edward O. Wilson

The E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation’s mission is to foster a knowing stewardship of our world through biodiversity research and education initiatives that promote and inform worldwide preservation of our biological heritage. We believe that by enhancing our public understanding of biodiversity, we can foster a culture of stewardship in which people are inspired to conserve and protect the natural world.

The Half-Earth Project, a program of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, has science at its core and our transcendent moral obligation to the rest of life at its heart. In collaboration with our partners, we are working to power one of the grandest conservation efforts of our time, and provide the urgently needed research, leadership and knowledge necessary to conserve half the planet for all of life.

Every observation makes a difference. Be a part of the Half-Earth solution.

Protect species. Protect the planet.

I added all of my observations made in Rock Creek Park and all of my observations of ants from anywhere in the world, in honor of Ed and this place and creatures that were so important in his early life. Happy Birthday, Edward O. Wilson!

@joshbecker I checked it and it does go to 404 (wasn't like that before). What you can do though is to go to the main website and just click donate.

I believe Half-Earth is a book/project by the biologist E. O. Wilson. He calculated that the only way to stave off a mass extinction crisis is to set aside 50% of land and sea to nature in order to reverse massive species extinction as devastating as the one that killed the dinosaurs.

Biodiversity research and education to foster stewardship is a great start. If stewardship is important to you, then make the step to activist! Without activist action at the local level, stewardship is left to those who may not care as much about biodiversity. Local denizens of an area can't let stewardship fall to government or even non-profit organizations. Stand against development of biodiverse habitats, and write to agencies, elected officials, and even newspapers when you see plans to harm or destroy an otherwise natural area. It is also good to support efforts of land trust organizations to purchase wild land that can be added to connect existing open space, wilderness areas, or wildlife refuges.
