Spartina (Spartina spp.) is an introduced maritime grass that colonises inter-tidal zones, forming dense clumps and trapping sediment. Spartina can cause an immense loss of biodiversity by turning mudflats that support wading birds, whitebait, eels and flounder into dry meadows.
Spartina is widespread in the South Island but at very low densities in almost all of the areas where control operations are being carried out.
In Canterbury, it is currently found at Brooklands Lagoon, the Avon-Heathcote estuary and Lyttelton harbour.
This year, Environment Canterbury, Christchurch City Council and the Department of Conservation are working with our local communities, in a project funded by DOC, to survey and control all spartina infestations in our region. We want to eradicate this pest from our region, and we need your help to do it!
