Joshua Tree National Park Invasive Plant Patrol is a citizen science approach to monitor and combat invasive infestations.
Many invasive species, such as Sahara mustard and fountain grass, have established in Joshua Tree National Park and are dirastically altering the ecosystem. Many invasive species can alter the fire cycle from every 100+ years or so to every 3-5 years. Particularly in disturbed ecosystems, invasive species outcompete many important native species and limiting the availability of food for big horn sheep and the endangered desert tortoise.
As an Invasive Plant Patrol member, you will monitor populations’ reproductive cycle and cut flowering and seed parts from the plant. By stopping invasives from reproducing, we will reduce the possibility of any more populations starting up and be one step closer to eradicating them from Joshua Tree National Park.
The Invasive Plant Patrol is an official project of Joshua Tree National Park. Learn more about the park from our website: www.nps.gov/jotr less ↑
