Motuora is an 80-hectare island within the Hauraki Gulf located 5km east of the Mahurangi Heads in northern Auckland. Throughout its history the island remained free of mammalian pests, however, forest clearance throughout Maori and European occupation had resulted in the local extinction of many species.
In 1990 the focus of the island changed from farming to volunteer-led restoration, and in 1995 the Motuora Restoration Society was formed with the goal of restoring the biodiversity and functionality of the island’s ecosystem. To date, this restoration project has been highly successful with the reintroduction/recolonisation of several species of birds, reptiles, invertebrates, and plants.
