This species is endemic to eastern Indonesia, being known from islands of Ambon, Seram and Halmahera in Maluku Province, and from Batanta Island in West Papua Province. The nominate form is restricted to Halmahera and Batanta; a separate subspecies, E. k. notomoluccense, occurs on Ambon and Seram.
Only a single specimen is known from Batanta, collected in the 19th Century along with the only known specimen of Emoia sorex.

There is no known use or trade in this species, which is known from a single specimen collected in the 19th Century.
There are no known species-specific conservation measures in place for this species. This species may occurs in one protected area, the Batanta Barat Nature Reserve on Batanta island. Further research on this species population status, distribution, habitats, and threats is recommended.
Emoia sorex has been assessed as Data Deficient as it is only known from the islands of Sulawesi, Halmahera, Obi, and Moratai. Its distribution on these islands is unknown and it only known to occurs in one protected area. Further information on this species population status, distribution, habitats and threats is required before an accurate assessment can be made.
