This species has a very wide but scattered distribution. Within the New Guinea region it is known from Salawati. It has also been collected on islands in the Banda Archipelago and Pulau Gag. It is likely to occur on islands throughout this region (P. Oliver pers. coms. 2014).
Unknown. Many large arboreal Gehyra appear to be rare however this may be an artifact of their ecology making them difficult to collect (P. Oliver. pers. comms. 2014).
Specimens in the pet trade from Indonesia under the name G. baliola probably represent this species. Yuwono (1998) reported that this species was always available in adequate numbers.
This species is traded, however, it has a very wide distribution and unlikely to be threatened by this (P. Oliver. pers. coms. 2014).
There are no known species-specific conservation measures in place for this species. It is unlikely that any major threats are impacting this species given its wide distribution and ability to cope with moderately disturbed habitats.
Gehyra barea has been assessed as Least Concern. It has a very wide distribution is likely to be under recorded and can cope with a degree of habitat modification.
