The purpose of this project is to map the presence and spawning grounds of Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasii) in participating regions. This information will provide us with spatial patterns and, in the future, temporal patterns.
The conservation of this cornerstone species is extremely important as Pacific Herring are important sources of food for many animals including bears and salmon.
Mapping the spawning grounds of Pacific Herring, concentrations of young herring, and occurrences of bait balls will allow for direct action to be taken that maximize conservation results.
Your observations of spawning or birds and other animals feeding on herring will contribute to improved knowledge, conservation and improved stewardship. Thank you!
