Pacific Newt Roadkill: 119 found dead today

February 25, 2019 (Monday) 9:40 am – 11:40 am

I found 119 dead newts on Alma Bridge Rd. this morning.

Overnight low temperature was 46o F. It seems the low temperatures (not lack of rain) kept the newts off the road last week, for the most part.

See: https://www.inaturalist.org/calendar/truthseqr/2019/2/25

Coverage: (~66%) Vulcan Materials quarry to gate SA-19.

Rainfall: (MTD: 7.18 in; YTD: 18.47 in) No rain in the past 8 days.

Traffic: Very few cars on the road this morning (<10). There were also a few county pickup trucks and a sheriff’s vehicle, plus a few big trucks entering/exiting the Vulcan quarry.
