The Scientific and Natural Areas program needs your help to document the plant species found at Blanket Flower Prairie SNA. Your observations will be used by citizens, researchers, and land managers for many years to come! A PlantBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many plants as possible. Participants are asked to bring a smart phone or pencil/paper as well as any books or supplies that can help with the identification process. Plant species will be photographed and submitted to iNaturalist, a web-based citizen science data base. Program begins at the picnic shelter in the campground at Buffalo River State Park. From there we will caravan to Blanket Flower SNA which is located 25 minutes south east from the park.
Blanket Flower Prairie is a unique site located on the boundary between Minnesota?s tall grass prairie and eastern deciduous forest. Home to a number of species of special concern, researchers and citizen scientists continue to monitor and document rare butterfly, dragonfly, bird, and plant species. Ongoing site management focuses on reconstruction of old fields to prairie vegetation with native seed collected from within the site.
