Purakaunui Saltmarsh Restoration

The Purakaunui saltmarsh is nationally recognised as a high quality example of a saltmarsh ecosystem. It exhibits a fine sequence from glasswort-dominated meadows through oioi sedgeland into flax-shrubland and developing treeland.

A collaboration between owners of the saltmarsh (Purakaunui Block Incorporation), a University of Otago society called AAPES (Animal,Aquatic, Plants, Ecological Society), and the Department of Conservation is seeking to restore and enhance the estuarine wetland.
